Women in Office

During the International Womyn’s Day Celebration, Councilmember Rose Herrera mentioned that the reason that not a lot of women hold high positions in government is because there are very few women to even vote for. She asked how many women at the celebration would be willing to run for a office in the next election and take on the political world and very few raised their hands. Is confidence the problem in this situation? What can women do to gain more confidence? If they can, what can men do to help?

  1. I'm not too sure what women could do to raise their confidence. But aid from men could be promotion from men that are higher up than them. Being recognized in the workforce by a boss or even a coworker could help boost their confidence. Many women are intimidated by men and superiors in the work force because of unfair wages and work hours.

  2. I agree with Ryan I was going to say the same thing. I don't think it's about the confidence but if it is, they shouldn't think negative of themselves because a women can work as hard as a man could. Women shouldn't be intimidated by men and their superiors because everything is possible.

  3. I think it's the other way around. I think men may feel a bit more inferior with women. Sounds a little off? Allow me to explain. As much as I hate to admit, this country is not only built from a Eruocentric point-of-view, but it's built from a MALE Eurocentric point-of-view. So being a woman of color, only makes me a double minority.

I don't think it's so much lack of confidence, I think many women in my life have plenty of confidence. Perhaps too much that could make a male feel inferior. When a women succeeds and stands firm in her beliefs, she can be seen as a B-word. If a man were to do the same exact thing, he is seen as successful. That frame of mind alone, should change between both genders. How males can help alleviate this frame of mind, is let down their guard and trust that a women could his job just as well.

  4. I think everyone just needs a good female role model that will step up and pave the path and bring in and attract more female office members and officials.

  5. I think people are intimidated because there is such a small portion of female Asians. They are discouraged and scared of defeat but if there were others joining it would boost the other women's confidence and make them feel that their goal is quite possible. The difficult part is convincing the first few to start it all.
