Response to Asians in the UCLA library

For those of you who weren't in class last Wednesday, we discussed the racist vlog that UCLA student, Alexandra Wallace posted regarding her point of view of Asians on campus. Watch this video and answer this question: How do you feel Jimmy Wong, the artist, responded to Alexandra's rant? Do you think it was positive or negative? What do you think we can do to prevent future events like this from happening?

  1. I think it was a witty and clever way to respond to such a negative view on Asians. I on the other hand am not Chinese, but I am still Asian and I was quite offended. Jimmy Wong made a very controversial and quite upsetting event into a more loving one. He touches up on her ignorance without offending Alexandra Wallace. Because of the lack of cultural knowledge of Wallace, she has now left UCLA. Three years of college and nothing to show, but ignorance, to me is a waste of her time. For that matter, this is a lesson to everyone that you can't judge one single continent of people and expect everyone on from that continent to behave the way she perceives them to be. I believe it is important to have some knowledge of all ethnicities so that incidents like this do not happen. If everyone learned something new about each culture, this will lesson ignorant rants like this.

  2. I think Jimmmy's response was funny and good way to counter Alexandra Wallace's rant. This is opposed to some of the other people on youtube that reacted negatively and sent her death threats or made disparaging remarks about her.

  3. I agree with you guys. I think this was my favorite response to Alexandra Wallace. All the other ones could have offended others, while Jimmy is just here to entertain =). I would encourage you guys to watch his others videos and to even buy his songs on iTunes! 100% of his profits go to Japanese relief efforts!

  5. I thought this was really interesting. I believe it was one of the better responses to the original video. I think the best way to prevent things like this is to educate people. Our world is always changing and education is the best way to open people's eyes and their mind.

  6. In my opinion, this was a creative and positive response to the UCLA girl's video. It was not threatening, but rather made light of the situation and addressed many of the important (and insulting) points made by Alexandra.

There's no point to be hostile when addressing a situation, and Jimmy Wong did a great job of using humor as a way to answer back to the problem.

  7. I think Jimmy did a great job in responding to her video. It wasn't negative at all. He responded in a funny and generous way and instead of calling her out on things and making it sound negative it just made people laugh.

  9. This video cleverly addressed the UCLA student's video while stating what she said was offensive. His approach was a lot more modest than Alex's. She "hit below the belt" and took things too far. Some things are better off not said.
