Philippines Independence Day? Asian History Month?

If we have Philippines Independence Day and Asian History Month how come it is not as big of a holiday or month like Cinco De Mayo, Dominican Independence Day, 4th of July or Black History Month? Is it because there's only a little bit of Asians in America? Why we don't celebrate our holidays as hard as White, African, and Mexican holidays?

  1. Because we are not unified enough!! Seriosuly, we are only 5%in the nation, however, even in bay area, the Asian did not really throw any celebration, I do not know why, maybe "panethnicity" is more important as we strike and advocate for our rights, where is out unity and power?!
I think advocacy is the first step!

  2. I totally agree with Alison. I think the 5 percent of Asians should unite. We should take a look at how the Mexican Americans and African Americans came about their our heritage month. The advantage of being Asian is 1) we can represent in our own ethnicity such as (Chinese American, Filipino American, Vietnamese American, Thai American, etc) to meet individual needs of people of our same background. 2) We can represent ourselves in larger numbers as Asian Americans. By having an Asian History month, we could celebrate several Asian heritages each week. The celebrations would be a perfect opportunity for others to see how diverse and complex Asians are. Understand that each Asian heritage is culturally different than the next. By implementing an Asian Heritage month, this event alone will unify Asians.

  3. I think it's not as widely celebrated because people aren't aware that there are months that are dedicated to Asian Americans.

  5. I seriously have never even heard of this holiday. It may be my Americanized side that has made me out of touch with the Asian society.

  6. Asians have not been prominent and many do not care to voice their opinions regarding how other nationalities celebrate the Asian culture, as long as they are left alone. I don't find it surprising, since it takes time to even know the history of the holiday events that are celebrated in this country.
