Mathematics

when it comes to mathematics, it is widely believed that Asians are superior to Americans and Europians; alomost every international mathematics contest , students from Aisa countries win the contest. For what reasons do you think, if any, Asians are better at mathematics than Americans and Europians?

  1. Since Asian International Students were receiving another education in their country back then, there were more likely have a higher level of math classes.
Therefore, they would have a better background, and when they study in USA, they can handle math classes more easily, they are good. OR maybe heritage :) or they study hard in general. For me, I am not good at math. However, during my highschool life, the math classes were super easy, I could totally handle them easily, but for college level, i quit math, I do not like math so I deceided to stop taking classes!!

  2. I think Asians being good at mathematics is just a stereotype. It's not like Asians are hardwired to be good with numbers. I think it just has to do more with their hard work ethic. Education is an extremely important thing in most Asian cultures. Without an education, you aren't very likely to succeed in your life. It is often considered honorable to get an education and become independent and financially stable. And in order to fulfill these goals I think what's really hardwired into Asians is good work ethics. And I'm Asian and I'm terrible at math.

  3. I also think that Asians being good at math is a stereotype. The explanation to why it's thought that Asians are superior to Europeans or any other race in math/education is the lifestyle and ideology that parents engrave into their children's minds. Asian parents insist that children not only succeed in education but exceed what other students accomplish. Asians being good at math is not because of having Asian blood, but because of the high level of performance they perform at during their years of education.

  4. Although it is a stereotype, it isn't untrue that a majority of Asians are good at math. Also, Asian parents know that a lot of work rely heavily on Math and the Sciences.

Asian parents (or so I have heard) place a lot of emphasis on the core subjects, such as Writing, Math, and Science because these are the main classes that schools look at. This is heavily emphasized even in the Indian culture (which are also considered "Asian") Parents force the importance of education into their child's skull from the very beginning, as a way to facilitate a better future.

  5. I would agree with a lot of the comments above and say that it really is untrue that a lot of Asians are especially good in math or any other subject well at least naturally. like Ryan said Asian parents really put emphasis on Math and science thinking those two are those most important and with my parents they really just expected me to do good in english because I was born here in america so it wasn't really an emphasis, but they really wanted me to good.

  6. I think it is depend on person. not all asian people are better than Americans and Europians in math. otherwise, the international student have higher level math classes when they studied at their own country. It may help them a lot in american to study math.

  7. Its not a coincidence that asians are bright. For example, China was the first to develop gun powder, rubber, and paper money. They have had an innovative mind set and a strong work ethic since the beginning of time.

  8. I think that this is partially true, but it is also a stereotype. I do believe that Asian countries push mathematics more that other countries because that is something that think is importants. Other countries focus on different subjects and probably are better in those subjects and some Asians. I believe that everyone could be good at math, its just not something all countries emphasize their education on.

  9. As others have said, I agree that this is a stereotype. I am Asian and I am just average at math. It heavily depends on how motivated and dedicated a student is. I feel like the ones that are often excellent at math have parents that are more strict on education or extremely encouraging when it comes to mathematics or school work.
