Japan

The massive earthquake in Japan has devastated many big cities an densely populated areas in Japan in addition to the Tsunami. With all this devastation in Japan and usually in many big natural disasters, why does the country that had been the victim of the disaster usually wait to ask for assistance from foreign countries even though they know they will eventually need it. The US along with a few other countries had offered their assistance and are waiting to be called upon to help. Why has Japan waited to accept their help? Is it because Japan is unsure of how much help they will need? I understand that there are still aftershocks and tsunami warnings still out, but why wait to accept the assistance of others? Is it just so the Japanese government can do as much as they can before they pile in more helpers from foreign countries and keeping them out of danger as well?

  2. It is not that they're not accepting the offers, the people and government of Japan are all very grateful for all the help that is offered. (from listening to Japan NHK News. TVJapan channel 640 is offering news on the earthquake/tsunami 24/7 for free.)

It's just that the earthquake just happened 2 days ago and currently there are earthquakes still happening at this time. (there were 2 that had a magnitude of 8 just today.) The whole country is devastated and many including the government are still trying to figure everything out and trying their best to do whatever they can.

I think at a time like this it's easy for outside people, who aren't physically there, to say what others should and should not do. But instead of questioning their actions, why don't we think of what WE can do to help instead.

  3. Actually Japan had already accepted other countries help and Korea is already in Japan and Germany and many more countries has left for Japan.
The blog question seems to refer to the reactions the government took on the Kobe Earthquake 16 years ago...I think it's a lot different now.

  4. Japan definitely welcomes the help from other countries but due to severe destruction its hard at the time for government of Japan to estimate the loss. I believe they want to wait and see what is required and how much help do they need. Besides their Nuclear power plants are creating problems and they cant just let any other country access those so thats why I guess they were being a little hesitant.

  5. Japan welcomes the help of other country but a little bit of hesitation because some people may take advantage of the situation it may create a problem instead of solution. We just need to pray hard because only our Almighty God can save them from natural disaster.

  6. Japan accept other countries help. Most countries give a lot of things that need in disaster area. I remember the earthquake happen in my country in 2008. A lot of countries help us.

  7. I am not sure about politics, but maybe Japanan is one of the most expensive country in the world, they have enough wealth to handle the situation. I do not know much, I believe JApan is a country that really self-proud, they invented everything from there country (cars, airconditioner and everything right?)so they thinkg they can handle it.But i think accepting Foreign help is also important because they are only help from their heart, not asking for return, and helping each othesr can help aid the international relationship.

  8. I recently heard that Japan is actually in an economic slump and isn't actually doing that well I personally think that its due to their pride that and maybe wanting to think about how to actually deal with the situation before accepting help.

  9. I am sure there are a lot of logistical planning involved. If Japan received an influx of help from all directions, how are they gonna know where it should go. All forms of aid will come into the country eventually, but logistically, it is impossible to get it to the people in a timely manner without many of the aid getting lost in transport.

Furthermore, the nuclear radiation worries are rising, and I am sure all forms of aid need to get away from the nuclear plant's radiation radius. After the initial shock and awe of this devastation, they'll get the aid they need and begin the rebuilding process.

  10. I think that Japan was very shocked by all of these events happening at once. I think that they needed some time to regain themselves. I'm sure that they have a set plan on what to do when these natural disasters occur. They were well prepared for the Tsunami and people knew what to do. It's just a shame that they said most of the casualties were of the elderly as they were not able to move out as fast. From a video I saw on youtube, the Tsunami wiped out an entire city in a matter of minutes.
