Awareness

How can we raise awareness of Asian American culture just within our own community? As in friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc..

  1. We can rasie awareness by organizing events in community, promote diversity in company and school. at least make other people know more inorder to "educate" them, as usual, other people in different ethnicity misunderstand Asian, and event try to imitate our language, or mis think out asian athnicity. Thats not gooooood!!!!!! Maybe first, Asian has to step up, and show them about our opinion, tell them more about ourselves, in a nice manner, and thus they will not feel bad or misunderstanding us. By talking to people, it can make small changes people around you. Something such as celebration the festival, such as mid-Autumn fest for Chinese, the moon festival, the person can bring moon cake and tell other people in work or class, or organization about the history :D

  2. We should have more events and let people know what an Asian is besides yellow skin, chinky eyes and smart people. We should educate people more about who we are, our history and what we have been through.

  3. I think we need to start changing our mentality and break through that glass/bamboo ceiling. This should happen within our own Asian communities first then by educating others. The best way to do so, is including more of the Asian American experience as part of U.S. History with textbooks. Most U.S. history textbooks are from a Eurocentric point-of-view, which do include some Asian history such as the Vietnam War and railroads. Though those events should not be forgotten, there is more to the Asian American experience such as the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Asiatic Barred Zone Act, Foreign Miner's Tax Act, Tydings McDuffie Act, etc. All these public policies excluded Asians from moving up so as not to break the glass/bamboo ceiling today.

To create awareness, we should implement the Asian American experience by way of U.S. History textbooks in schools other than college.

  4. I think that we can raise awareness of Asian American culture by having more events to promote our culture. By making other American citizens feel comfortable with our cultural celebrations, etc we can make them understand and appreciate our roots.

  6. I believe we can raise awareness of Asian American culture by promoting events such as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. By promoting and advocating why our culture makes an impact on America we can enrich other people's lives.

  7. We should educate others of what we have learned about Asian American History and encourage others to be involved in order for them to enhance their knowledge. It could be a simple thing such as taking an Asian History related class. We have many Asians in our community but only a small fraction takes related classes or join groups/activities.
