America Is In The Heart

From Ana:

What seems to be the main factor why Asian Immigrant including Filipino,
experienced Inequality in this country from 1910 to 1950 in relation to the
story of Angel Island and the story of America is in the heart, and what is the
important lesson of the story from the past that we can learn in our generation
today.

From Dennis:

The two brothers perform some tough labor but they do not receive the proper
amount of payment for their work. When and where are situations like this still
happening?

  1. Tough Labor that doesn't receive proper amount of payment for their work, those immigrants that work in care home facility, they work 24 hours a day sometimes no off but they get paid less amout of money, also from department store, restaurants and janitorial jobs. Now ,that we are in recession many companies take advantage of the situation less pay for tough jobs.

  2. Situations like this are actually happening a lot today. For instance the mexican workers that you can hire from the streets, they work really hard, all day 10 hours sometimes for very little pay. ana marie is right, most companies today will pay very little because of the recession, and they would rather fire you and hire someone new for much lower pay.

  3. I agree with minh. I was going to say that I have seen men who are standing infront of Home Depot, waiting for someone to offer them a home improvement job. Since they are not "professional" and probably dont have the credentials they would be payed less money for the job they did.

  4. A lot of the men that wait outside home improvement stores for work are illegal immigrants. Since many arn't able to get jobs with contruction companies (requires SSN), then they are forced to work under the table. Since no legal contracts between the laborers and their employers, set wages may be talked about, but not necissarily carried out. And since they have no formal legal contract and are at the mercy of their employers, the workers have no leverage to deman higer wages or benefits.

There was an interesting campaign for farm labor recently called the Take Our Jobs campaign where field workers challenged Americans who were threatening legislation against illegal immigrants to step up and do their jobs for one day. Only 3 people signed up to do it.

  5. there are still a lot of situation when two person do the same job but one got pay more than other. Example is me and my coworker. We both do the same job but i got paid higher than her. I guess because i work there long, i'm neater than her, and I seem like more responsibility than her.

  6. There are a lot of situations where they don't pay properly. Sometimes there are discrimination in jobs and people performing the same type of job recieve different salaries.

  7. I agree with Gonzalo, I think there are many situations, some can be fair but many are not. There are many people who should be paid much more than they receive and many who are paid much more for what they don't do.

  8. I can imagine problems with unfair wages still happening in every country. But I would think that the people living in a third world country would have it worse. I've seen lots of documents of factory workers getting paid 5-10 cents for an hour of work. Not only that, they had a poor living condition that the company provided. It's really sad to see and hear about all these unfortunate events.

  9. One of the major reasons of difference in pay is the gender of the worker. Many people are unaware of this discrepancy and think that we have gottten past this point in history, but really payequity is still something women are fighting for. Women working the same job as a man are more likely to get paid less. In fact, women are only making 74 cents to the dollar despite the Equal Pay Act of 1963 as well as the 14th Ammendment which calls for the equal protection under the law.

  10. The main example I have of people not receiving the proper amount of payment for the work they do are illegal immigrants today. I often see guys standing outside Home Depot, waiting for someone to offer them a job. When they do find a job, sometimes the people that hire them do not pay them enough or not pay them at all. And those illegal immigrants cannot really do anything like report it to the cops because they have no papers.

  11. I think it still happens a lot here in america; yet it wouldn't be as bad as the brothers' situation described in the book. I suppose it could happen to alot of illegal immigrants who don't have legitimate visa or something. they usually depend on the money "under the table" so without any type of contract, it would most likely for them to work taking huge risks

  12. I agree with Minh also. What they're trying to do is if they can't have a regular paying job, they will try to make the best of what they could do to make money. The important lesson for us is to try to make the best of what you got, you always have to start from the bottom to get to the top, and there's always something you got to give up if you want everything you want
